Day 43

April 11, 2017

Up at 5 AM to rain and 46 degrees.  Hopefully the rain will keep the dust down on our drive today.  Our leader was sure correct when he said we would have to slow down today.  This is the worst stretch of road we’ve seen so far.  Took us about 3.5 hours to go 132 miles.  Immediately upon arrival at Beaver Creek RV Park, Bob went to do the laundry for our usual Tuesday wash up.  In spite of all the rain and having to park in a mud puddle we got settled and had a nice lunch in the Unity.  We drove across the street to the Visitor Information Center, met the man running it, had a good chat with him (79, rides his 1939 bicycle to work every day) then drove a 100 meters south to see “Our Lady of Grace” Catholic Church created from one of the abandoned Army huts used in the Alaska Highway construction.  An Army chaplain built it for the locals.

The a drive north of the campground to Buckshot Betty’s, a real saloon where you could get a meal, a drink at the bar, buy a t-shirt or cap with Betty’s likeness, rent a room, buy a cinnamon bun or choose to buy a bottle of wine from the six labels available.  We chose the only Cabernet as the other five were Merlot.

Back to the Unity we enjoyed our C$13.00 purchase from Betty’s, read a while and off to bed we went.
