Day 39

July 7, 2017

Our drive today, the 2nd longest so far, 243 miles, started at Whitehorse and went further north on the Alaska Highway until we got to Haines Junction.  We saw a grizzly bear about 20 miles out but we could not get stopped in time for a photo and Iris wouldn’t get out and go back.
Some scenes along this portion of the trip:

There we actually went straight but this is the Haines Highway while the Alaska Highway made a 90 degree right turn.  Haines Junction has a Catholic Church built in 1954 from an Army hut used during the construction of the Alaska Highway.

Also a monument to the wildlife in the area.

The scenery today was awesome with mountains with snow on them, beautiful lakes and great pull-outs for photos.

We had our lunch at a nice pull-out.

At the Canada/USA border we answered all the questions correctly so we were waved through.

Along the Chilkat River the scenery was pretty specular.

We arrived at Haines, population around 1700, in a very nice campground with wide spaces, grass and level.  We had a briefing at 5:00 PM about tomorrow’s activity and then we had a night supper of home-made pimento cheese sandwiches.  First time we ever tried to do this and it turned out pretty good.
