Day 37

July 5, 2017
Activities planned for today so in spite of 48 degree weather we were ready after getting the plastic bin from the car with our winter duds.  Our first stop of the day was at the Miles Canyon Observation where the Yukon River cuts a narrow passage through solid rock.  This gives a good idea of the dangers and hazards the Stampeders of 1898 endured to get to the gold fields over 400 miles further north.

We also drove to the suspension foot bridge over the river where some hardy folks in our group went for a multi-mile walk (not us).

Next was a visit to the Whitehorse Fish Ladder, longest in the world, to get adult salmon upstream and fingerlings downstream past the dam that produces power for Whitehorse.

Lunch was at the Klondike Ribs & Salmon, downtown Whitehorse in the oldest two buildings in Whitehorse.  We chose the fish & chips and shared the 2-piece order.  They use halibut instead of cod and it was fantastic with fries and coleslaw followed by bread pudding with ice cream that we had to take half home.  In the afternoon we visited the SS Klondike, a sternwheeler on the bank of the Yukon River.  We watched a 20 minute film about the vessel’s history then walked the plank to the vessel.  It was outfitted just like it would have been for an early 1900’s trip to Whitehorse carrying passengers, canned goods, gasoline, beer and other necessities.  Very interesting display.

Our final stop of the day was the Yukon Visitor Reception Center where we picked up a free parking permit and watched a film about the territory.

Back to the Unity and watched NBC news on cable, then a light supper before bedtime.
